Hafragilsfoss
The canyons of Jökulsá are one of the biggest canyons in Iceland and undeniably the most diverse in structure and form. They reach 25 km, the are 0,5 km wide and in many places well over a 100 meters. The canyons are said to have been forged in a catastrofic glacier burst leaving behind magnificent work of art chiseled out by Mother Nature.

The older Reykholt Church
was built in 1886-87. The church is a good example of the later kind of timber church with a tower. The church served until 1996, when the new church was consecrated. It came under the protection of the National Museum in 2001 and is now part of The National Museums collection of houses.

Hraunfossar in Borgafjörður.
A little glimpse of the beautiful and spectacular waterfalls. In contrast to e.g. Dettifoss (27. october) these waterfalls are low and with much less water - clear water, but each of the 900 meters they span has something special to it when you look closer. The long exposure here was meant to emphasize the movement of the water and the contrasting clear colors both in the rocks and the stream.

Rubjerg Knude Fyr
Rubjerg Knude is the high point of the long, steep cliff of Lønstrup Klint between Nørre Rubjerg and Lønstrup in Jotland, Denmark. Sand drift has ravaged the area since the end of the middle Ages, forcing the population out. At the same time, the cliff has nibbled its way inland. Both aspects are a dramatic testimony to the struggle between humans and nature in the area.

Rubjerg dune is a massive deposit of shifting sand that covers Rubjerg's almost vertical cliffs. Together, they are known as Rubjerg Knude (node); standing approximately 90 m tall, it is the highest point on the 13 km of coastal incline that constitutes Lønstrup Klint.

The cliff comprises meltwater deposits of sand and clay, compressed by the ice during the last Ice Age around 20,000 years ago. The dune is relatively young. It is only within the last few centuries that coastal erosion has released large quantities of sand from the cliff deposited on Rubjerg Knude by winds off the North Sea.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the ravages of sand drift were so violent that the people living nearest the coast had to relocate their farms further inland. The huge quantities of sand buried everything without mercy. In the parish of Rubjerg, the church was left solitary, and as time went by it became ever more difficult to dig a path to the church door through the sand deposits. The church was abandoned in 1904.

To subdue the sand drift, the dunes were planted with lyme grass, which caused them to grow. More sand was released from the cliff, blew across and covered the planted areas, which were then replanted, and so on.

In 1900, Rubjerg Knude lighthouse was inaugurated with a 23-m tower on the highest point of the coastal incline; it was then a good 200 m inland. Its light could be seen from a distance of up to 42 km away and it benefited both international shipping and the local fishermen.

Over the years, sand drift caused the dunes to grow exponentially, with the result that ships close to the shore could no longer see the beam of the lighthouse. At the same time, coastal erosion brought the cliffs closer and closer to the lighthouse. In 1992, the struggle against sand drift and coastal erosion was abandoned entirely, and Rubjerg Knude lighthouse was left to the power of nature. Its light had been extinguished back in 1968. Buildings to the west are gradually being freed of sand west of the dune; here, it is only a short distance to the incline. They are expected to collapse onto the beach within the next 10-15 years.

I went downtown yesterday with some of my youngest grandchildren and what did we see. Santa has come to town. Before we know Xmas is upon us - with joy, lights and music - enjoy the rest of the weekend :-)

You have been asking some questions in the past three days. This photo as well as the three others are taken on Hellisheiði near Reykjavík. The temperature was -8°C or 17 F.
The geothermal area of the Hellisheiði Geothermal Plant is at Hengill, a mountain situated on an active volcanic ridge. Estimated production for the Hellisheiði Plant is 300 MW electricity and 400 MW thermal energy. The plant´s purpose is to meet increasing demand for electricity and hot water for space heating in the industrial and domestic sectors. Two steam turbines (45 megawatts each; 90 MW total) and a low-pressure turbine (32 MW) are online as of summer 2008.

Hengill area
The construction area is on Hellisheiði heath and its vicinity south of Hengill volcano. The area is divided into the upper geothermal area above Hellisskarð pass and the lower area below the pass. A much larger area has, however, been included in research to assess the environmental impact of the power plant. Ground water research covers the area from the south coast, west to Faxaflói bay, north to Esja mountain and Þingvallavatn lake and east to Ölfusá river.

The estimated production for Hellisheidi Plant is 300 MW of electricity and 400 MW of heat. By connecting to adjacent areas, the power plant can be expanded considerably.

Today is the day of Thorlak the holy. We are memorizing Thorlak the holy former bishop of Skalholt who died the 23. december 1193.
Pope Johannes Paul II named him the guarding saint of Iceland and he is the only icelandic saint in the catholic religion who has been officially recognized.
He was so holy that he never drank water but only vine.
The picture shows the free Lutheran church in Reykjavík and to the right the National Gallery of Iceland. The house the gallery is situated in was build in 1916 and construted as a freezing plant. Various activites have found place in this house, for many years it was the most popular dance house in town. When I was young this was the place to go weekend evenings to listen to rock bands, have a drink or two and admire the girls. From 1988 you admire art in the house.
