The canyons of Jökulsá are one of the biggest canyons in Iceland and undeniably the most diverse in structure and form. They reach 25 km, the are 0,5 km wide and in many places well over a 100 meters. The canyons are said to have been forged in a catastrofic glacier burst leaving behind magnificent work of art chiseled out by Mother Nature.

Jökulsá á Fjöllum
originates from under the glacier Vatnajökull or to be precise Dyngjujökull and runs from there down to Öxarfjörður. The river Kreppa is the biggest river among many others joining Jökulsá on her way down. The rivers sediment has through the ages shaped the appearance due to the fact that every year it will carry down to the low land 5 million tonnes of sediment. The river is the second longest river in the country but the river basin is definitely the biggest of all the waterfalls in Iceland. Highway 864 lies alongside the riverbanks on the east side and even from the roadside the view is spectacular.
